How to Prevent Click Fraud: Click Fraud Detection

September 22nd, 2009 / 19 Comments

New methods of click fraud detection are being created daily, but the best way to prevent click fraud is to make the effort to manage your ad campaigns and understand the use of proxies, spyware and adware that aid in click fraud.

In pay per click PPC advertising, there are two parts to every ad unit. The first part is the owner of the website, blog or software that is displaying the ad; the second is the advertiser who has created the ad. Because an advertiser pays the website owner each time the advertisement is clicked, there is a chance of click fraud. Some website owners will click on their own ads or tell their friends to click on the ads, simply so that they can get more money.

In order to prevent click fraud, there are certain things an advertiser can do to help with click fraud detection:

1. Watch out for sudden spikes in click rate: Advertisements typically have a standard click through rate. If an ad suddenly gets a huge increase in clicks without a corresponding increase in sales, click fraud is a likely suspect.

2. Avoid targeting high risk countries: When geographically targeting advertisements, start locally and notice the click through rate. This CTR should be consistent even if you expand advertisement targeting to different countries.

3. Carefully target websites: Be very selective about the sites that you are going to place any advertisement on. In addition, click fraud detection is easier if you have a smaller amount of potential suspects.

4. Utilize click fraud detection software: Buying click fraud software can be beneficial in the long run. Ask around in forums and social media networks to find which program will be the best for you.

5. Hire a professional: Larger advertisers may wish to spend more money on hiring a professional click fraud detection company.

Click fraud is a huge issue for online advertisers and can result in major loss of profits. These techniques for click fraud detection are helpful when trying to eliminate the problem.
